Roots

I, as a third culture kid, have become accustomed to surrounding myself with various foreign influences. Therefore, resulting in me forgetting and neglecting my very own beautiful culture. Even though my background keeps me grounded in life, I realised that I’ve never truly appreciated the value and importance of my roots.

The process of creating this piece and discovering the unique facets of Korean culture has strengthened my love and gratitude for it. Living half of my life abroad, I had always enjoyed the beauty of sharing my culture with others and getting to know many cultures of my peers at school. Not only has it motivated me to embrace and connect with my Korean identity, but it has also given me the opportunity to experience and indulge in the depth of my roots.

I hope to inspire everyone to dig deeper into their roots and grow closer to their rare cultures with this piece.

Hanok

Hanok is a traditional Korean house that is both unique and sustainable. The purpose of this piece is to not only introduce others to my culture but also to inform people about a devastating reality: Seoul's destruction of architectural heritage. Hanoks were essential for our ancestors who lost their homes as a result of the Korean War.

They are being demolished as Korea quickly modernises and began destroying Hanoks in order to develop apartments. The national obsession with modernity and for fancier buildings is leading to the destruction of thousands of Hanok. In this piece, I used various mediums and unique techniques to showcase Hanok’s different architectural characteristics.

This work presents the Hanok in the centre, while the wall, patterns, roof and tree is introduced, bringing the artwork altogether. The acrylic board was used to add depth, including details about Hanok's component with white letterings. The high rise buildings also accentuate the message.

Mum's flower vase

This piece was very much of an experimental work. Using modelling paste, I used a palette knife to add depth to the paste as well as texture.

Using oil pastels and crayons, I drew childish sketches of my mother's favourite flowers. The vase was decorated using old buttons to add a unique element to this piece.
