Pencil/Colour Pencil Drawings

Observational drawing, Still-life, Nude & Colour pencil

untied

For this piece, I created the shape of a flying dragon using unrelated props and drew it realistically through direct observation. The thread on the upper right is a very thick rope used for hanging curtains; to express the distance difference, I made the rope that’s further away smaller. The twisted pattern of the thread, the glass bottle in the centre of the drawing, and the round bars in it were chosen to have their fine details used as compositional elements rather than giving them a meaning.

The title is untied from the message of this piece because the items placed on the desk is not bound to a single interpretation; rather, they are open to new interpretations from the original, fixed meaning of still life.

This is a figure drawing of my father's photo of me playing a soccer match against another school. Football played a huge part in my high school life, despite Covid-19 taking away my chances to play in my junior and senior years.

The reason for using coloured paper without drawing the background was to use the easy-to-rub characteristics of Conte as a gradation. Since I wanted to express a more graphic feeling rather than a sports illustration, I used only Black & White and Sienna hues to accentuate the colour of my school team's uniform.

This piece was drawn by looking at a model photo in Croquis Cafe, which shows the structure of the human body; it was easy to observe how bones and muscles are connected while working on this piece.

The pose, which has the right shoulder up and the left arm down, made it possible for me to understand how the neck and shoulder bones are connected in a straight line. It was a work in which made me perceive the mysteries of the human body.

Growing up scares me. In this self-portrait, I wanted to depict my wandering thoughts during the summer.

Amid Covid-19 and all the restrictions we were under, I, like everyone else, was stressed out and upset that I could not capture all of my favourite memory as a senior in high school. Even though I will soon be moving on to the next chapter of my life, I am buried in my thoughts, reminiscing on all the memorable moments from my childhood. Additionally, I focused on building a relationship between light and shadows. The light shining through the window made the outline of my face well defined. The notepaper placed next to me gives the image a sense of space, and the way the light and dark repeat each other creates a dynamic composition. As in the photo, the outline of the notepaper at the bottom left is slightly blurred so that the main figure, which is me, can be emphasised more.

The way I expressed the direction of light was influenced by dutch artist Rembrandt.
